Yes, they are. Blogging is about conversations, or at least it is supposed to be. Trackbacks help to follow this flow, that's it.

About spammers I don't see them using, while I see lots of spam as direct comments.

My two cents.

I'm really divided. Here's what I think is a typical example -- yes they are there but they are not useful at all (and one of them might be some sort of disingenuous spam attempt): http://tinyurl.com/2kqgs7 ... if they could be less useless (say, if I could moderate them like I can moderate comments) I would not hesitate to enable them, but as it is, I think they are unattractive and potentially a security risk.
